The "Casa Guilherme de Almeida", located in São Paulo, Brazil, was listed as overturned heritage on March 16, 2015 by the Condephaat (Council of Defense of the Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Historical Heritage of the State of São Paulo) and since then, has been transformed into a museum, which honors the poet Guilherme de Almeida and has his personal belongings and collections. Thinking about all the historical context that the place offers, the purpose of this project is the development of a building attached to this house, which has the great characteristic of being totally public and offers many activities to the local population. The building has three floors and has exhibition areas, classrooms and/or workshops and lectures, work rooms, as well as a library with local collection, living areas and a coffee shop. The construction method of the attached building uses contemporary elements that emphasize what is intervention and what is pre-existing. Neutral materials are proposed, respecting the existing house's integration and its historical value. The attached building is made of concrete, which is characterized by being one of the most resistant materials available, as well as serving as a structural element of the entire building. This building was inserted into the existing topography of the land, respecting it, and making part of the building underground.
Long windows are like cutouts in the building, positioned according to the interiors and their functions, providing natural daylight. The sliding doors from the ground floor and the volume through the building on the upper floor are made of weathering steel. The elevator box that connects the house to the annex making all floors fully accessible is made of glass and allows a panoramic view of the patio and deck, which are located at the backyard. The house and attached building are linked by a covered patio for guest access, which is located on the ground floor. The public entrance control takes place on the same floor, where there is a reception, spaces dedicated to exhibitions, toilets, and stairs, as well as a gift shop. The windows on this floor are at ground level, are 90 cm high and overlook the outside garden. In the basement, there are the classrooms with infinite layout possibilities, which can also be used for lectures and workshops, a workroom and/or meetings room, as well as toilets and a pantry. Although the floor is underground, there is natural light through the long windows, which are 3.5 meters from the floor. On the upper floor is where the library and coffee shop are located, and has three levels with differences of 60 cm in height, creating a path through the floor. In addition to a possible resting place, where people can pick up their books and sit down to read them, enjoying a beautiful exterior view and a coffee. On the stairs that connect the ground floor and the upper floor, there is a zenithal lighting system, which guarantees a certain illumination for the reception area but respecting the place of the library's local collection, which has artificial lighting to ensure the preservation of the books.
